The Art of Single-Tasking: A Lesson From My Dog

by Carol | Feb 10, 2025 | Blog

Ever notice how challenging it is to do just ONE thing? Not two, not three – just one.  (Confession:  I brush my teeth and make my bed at the same time)

Like many of us, I pride myself on being a multi-tasker…like some efficiency badge of honor. But my toughest critic has turned out to be my dog, Olive. At the same time everyday, this little fur baby brings me a toy as if to say…I’d like some of your attention now.

So when I sit down to play with her while checking emails or scrolling through social media, she gives me this piercing look that says it all: ‘If you’re going to be here, BE here.’

And when I don’t? She simply drops her toy and walks away. Message received, loud and clear Olive.

Her feedback taught me something profound: partial attention is deeply unsatisfying – for everyone involved.

Now, when I play with Olive I commit fully. Sometimes it’s just for 5 minutes, but she gets all of me. No phone, no laptop, no distractions. If I’m being honest, I am still working on it for other areas of my life.  Just being aware of when I am dividing my attention is the first step..changing my behavior is the second!

Where in your life could giving your full attention create more meaningful moments?
