Stop Making Career Decisions From a Distance

Last week on the coast of Croatia, I was surrounded by distant, seemingly unremarkable islands. A boat ride changed all that.

An hour at sea and I discovered something completely different: charming villages tucked into hidden coves, ancient stone structures with incredible stories, and a landscape that was absolutely captivating.

From afar? Just another island. Up close? Pure magic.

This is exactly how career change works.

That job, industry, or creative pursuit that seems “interesting but unclear” from a distance? You’ll never know what it actually feels like until you get closer.
-Have a 20-minute coffee chat with someone doing the work
-Take on a small project in that space
-Sign up for one class or workshop

We get stuck thinking it has to be all-or-nothing. Quit your job or stay miserable. Go back to school for 2 years or forget about it.

But the truth? Tiny experiments create momentum and clarity.
You don’t need to book the whole journey. Just take the boat ride to get a closer look.

What’s one small experiment you could try this week to explore something that’s been calling to you?
