I’m no Improv pro. I’m definitely a work in progress…. And likely will be for as long as I do it! But what I have learned from 2+ years of weekly Improv classes (and even a few performances) is this:

The Power of Being Present: In improv, you can’t be three scenes ahead in your mind. The moment you start planning your “perfect response” or crafting tomorrow’s strategy, you miss the gold happening right now. Sound familiar, business leaders? The best opportunities often come from reading the room and responding to what’s actually happening, not what we planned for.

Embrace the “Mistakes”:  There are no mistakes in improv—only unexpected gifts and opportunities. That time my scene partner called me by the wrong name? It became a running gag that was hilarious. When we reframe “failures” as plot twists, we unlock creative solutions we never saw coming.

The Art of True Listening: Not the “waiting for your turn to talk” kind of listening. Real, deep, “I’m catching every nuance” listening. Because in improv, like in business and life, the magic happens in the spaces between—in catching the subtle signals that others miss.

Let Go of the Story You’re Writing:  We all have scripts in our heads about how things “should” go. But the moment you insist on your predetermined path, you miss the brilliant alternatives unfolding right in front of you. The best scenes happen when I completely abandon my original idea and build on someone else’s energy instead.
